Oakland is one of Chicago’s 77 official community areas, and has the distinction of being the smallest. Technically on the South Side, it is just about midway between the southern and northern ends of Chicago, and borders Lake Michigan to the east. It covers parts of the zip code 60653, containing the Ida B. Wells / Darrow Homes and Bronzeville. Originally a settlement called “Cleaverville,” developers gave it the name Oakland in 1871 as it was subdivided to accommodate the city’s growing population.
